New Year's Eve in Plainville was "very quiet" possibly because most of the bars and restaurants were closed by 10 p.m., said Sgt. Charles Smedick, head of the Plainville Police Traffic Division.

No DUI arrests were made New Year's Eve, nor were there any motor vehicle accidents, Smedick said.

Police made 273 arrests for driving under the influence during 2007. "That far exceeds the 211 DUI arrests made in 2006," Smedick said. The department is making a concentrated effort to remove intoxicated drivers from Plainville streets. "We've seen a dramatic reduction in DUI accidents," he said. In 2007, there were seven motor vehicle accidents, attributed to driving under the influence, that resulted in injury, which is fewer than in the past, he said. In the past four years, there has been in Plainville one fatality attributed to driving under the influence.

As of Dec. 31, police made 35 DUI arrests, the second highest monthly total this year. In August 2006, police made 37 such arrests.

There were several domestic incidents on New Year's Eve and on New Year's Day, none which resulted in serious injuries, police said. - Robin Lee Michel
