Mystery play and dinner - Mary Our Queen Church, 248 Savage St., Plantsville, has scheduled its annual mystery play and dinner, Saturday, Jan. 24, in the church hall, beginning with the social hour at 6 p.m. and followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The menu includes chicken, potato, vegetable, roll, dessert and beverage. Tickets cost $20 and are on sale after masses on Jan. 17 and 18. No tickets will be sold at the door. For more information and reservations, call (860) 276-0654.

Swing/ballroom dancing - A session of eight beginners and intermediate swing/ballroom dance classes are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 26, Feb. 2, 9 and 23, March 2, 9, 16 and 23, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at North Center School, 240 N. Main St. Contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (860) 276-6219 to register. Pre-registration is required. Payment is due upon registration. Registration cannot be paid the night of class. The cost is $50 per couple. There are no refunds and this class is for couples. Make checks payable to Town of Southington and mail to Parks and Recreation Department, P.O. Genealogy group - The Southington Genealogical Society is scheduled to meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., in the community room of the Southington Police Department, 69 Lazy Lane. This month's talk is "How to start your research," by speaker Ray Thomas. There is no admission charge and no obligation to become a member. Refreshments will be served.
Orchard Valley Garden Club - The Orchard Valley Garden Club is scheduled to meet Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 10 a.m., at the Southington Library, 255 Main St. The club is also a charter member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut. Little League and Girl's Softball registration - A town-wide registration for all Southington Little Leagues and Girl's Softball is scheduled for Saturdays, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Derynoski Elementary School cafeteria, 240 Main St. This is for Southington residents only; the minimum age is 5 years old as of April 30, 2009. Parents should bring the child's birth certificate and the parent's driver's license for proof of residency. For more information, call the Parks and Recreation office at (860) 276-6219.
Winter weather clothing drive - The Southington High School Student Council has scheduled a winter weather clothing drive for Social Services, Saturday, Jan. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon, in the high school cafeteria. All types of outerwear and accessories will be accepted.
Chili competition - The 2nd Annual Testa Fiesta is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31 from noon to 3 p.m. at Testa's Banquest Facility, 26 S. Center St., Southington. Some of the restaurants participating in the chili competition are: Saint's, The Groggy Frog, Wood-n-Tap, Jerzie Joe's, Agave, Pig Out Barbecue, El Sombrero, Mt. St. Albans Raid lecture - The Southington Library has scheduled "St. Albans Raid" on Monday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. The program is presented by Ralph Lord Roy, of Plantsville. La Leche League of Southington - A mother-to-mother breastfeeding support meeting, guided by La Leche League Leader, is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 2, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Wolcott Library, 469 Bound Line Road. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and their children can come for discussion, problem-solving, and social support; snacks are served. Arc jewelry fundraiser - The Arc of Southington has scheduled a Lia Sophia costume jewelry party at its home office, 201 W. Main St., Plantsville, Monday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Orders will arrive in time for Valentine's Day. All proceeds will benefit the Social Services and Advocacy Program. Relay for Life - A meeting for Relay for Life 2009 is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 4, 6 p.m., at the Southington High School Library, 720 Pleasant St. The first meeting for team captains will begin at 7 p.m. and volunteers are needed to make this year's event a success. Relay for Life is an annual 24-hour walkathon to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Newcomers and Neighbors Club - The Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Southington is a women's social club open to both new and to lifelong residents of Southington. Monthly events include Ladies Night Out, Moms and Tots Playgroup, Couples Social, and Book Club. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the all-purpose room at the Southington Care Center, 45 Meriden Ave. Participants will make a craft and can bring a book to swap with someone in exchange for another book. Children's musical - The Southington Land Conservation Trust has scheduled the children's musical "Lemonade," Saturday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m., at DePaolo Middle School, 385 Pleasant St. The 45-minute presentation includes 34 first- through fourth-graders. Valentine chocolate festival - The American Legion Auxiliary, Kiltonic Unit 72, in Southington has scheduled the Valentine Chocolate Festival, Saturday, Feb. 7, (snow date Feb. 8), at the American Legion Post Home, 66 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a large variety of all things chocolate, including candy, cakes, cookies, pies, and tortes, all handmade by members. In addition, there will be over 25 themed raffle baskets and a cafe to have lunch, consisting of stuffed baked potatoes, chowder, hot dogs, drinks and special desserts for a nominal price. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

American Legion meeting - The American Legion Post 72 Realty Corporation has scheduled its annual meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m. during the Post 72 regular monthly meeting at the Post Home, 64 Main St., Southington, in the hall upstairs.

Breakfast Club - The Breakfast Club at the First Congregational Church of Southington, 37 Main St., across from the Town Green, meets on the second Thursday, September through June, from 8 to 9 a.m. in Memorial Hall. A complete breakfast is only $1, and the public is always welcome. Adequate parking is available in the municipal parking lot.

Valentine Dinner Dance - The Southington Elks Lodge, 114 Main St., has scheduled a Valentine Dinner Dance, Saturday, Feb. 14. Cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m., dinner will be served at 7 p.m. and the "Rockin Heartbeats" band will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight. The grand prize raffle is a Farmington Marriott overnight stay, including breakfast. Tickets are $25 per person and are available in the lodge's Tap Room. When I'm in Charge - Southington Youth Services, 93 Main St., has scheduled a Red Cross program for 4th- and 5th-grade students called "When I'm in Charge," Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m., and Tuesday, April 14. Presented by Terri Benoit, this program covers how to be safe and responsible when students are at home on their own. Organics presentation - The Southington Land Conservation Trust is scheduled to present "Organics," Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Southington Public Library meeting room, 255 Main St. The speaker will be Bill Duesing, the executive director of the Connecticut chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association. Mardi Gras Night - The 5th annual Southington Rotary Mardi Gras Night is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 6 to 10 p.m., at Anthony Jacks Wood-Fired Grill, 30 Center St., Southington. Cost is $65 per person and includes food stations, beer, wine, and entertainment provided by Dr. Ya Ya's Gumbo Party. Proceeds from this event will used to benefit areas of greatest need in Southington. Pottery techniques demonstration - The Southington Arts and Crafts Association has scheduled "Basic Pottery Throwing Techniques," for Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m., at the Orchards at Southington, 34 Hobart St. This free demonstration is presented by Richard Kupstis, a retired art and social studies teacher and past president of the Wesleyan Potters in Middletown. Arc Dinner Dance fundraiser - The Arc of Southington, an advocacy organization and service provider for people with intellectual, cognitive and developmental disabilities, will hold its 17th annual Dinner Dance fundraising event, Saturday, March 7, from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St., Plantsville. Tickets cost $60 per person and include a cheese table during cocktail hour, a family style dinner of salad, pasta, chicken and beef dishes, potatoes, vegetables, rolls, dessert, coffee, open bar and disc jockey Gary Racine of Ultimate Entertainment Professional Disc Jockeys. A silent auction and raffle will be held and all proceeds from the event benefit The Arc of Southington Social Services and Advocacy Program. Mill Foundation for Kids dinner - The Mill Foundation for Kids, a community-based, charitable organization, has scheduled its 3rd annual fundraiser dinner on Saturday, March 14 from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St., in Southington. ‘Shamrockin' for Kid's will be a St. Patrick's Day themed dinner dance and will include raffles and an auction to raise funds to help bring joy to children while in the hospital. The cost is $75 per person and includes dinner, open bar and dancing. Sponsorships for the dance are also available. The mission of the Mill Foundation for Kids, Inc. is to ease the burden of children dealing with illnesses by providing toys and other gifts to pediatric facilities for the use of children recovering from illnesses, as well as donating funds towards research aimed at eliminating pediatric illnesses.
